Porcelain vs Natural Stone Patio: Which Is Best for an Essex Garden?
Honest pros and cons of porcelain, sandstone and limestone patios in the Essex climate. Costs, maintenance, slip ratings and what survives the clay.
The patio question we get asked most: porcelain or natural stone? Both are great. They suit different gardens, budgets and how much weekend faff you are up for. Here is the no-spin breakdown after laying hundreds of them across Essex.
The short answer
- Choose porcelain if you want zero maintenance, a contemporary look, and a patio that looks identical in 10 years.
- Choose natural stone (sandstone or limestone) if you want warmth, character, and you do not mind sealing it every 2 to 3 years.
Porcelain patios, the pros
- No sealing, ever. Porcelain is non-porous (water absorption under 0.5%).
- Frost-proof. Critical in Essex when we get a hard January.
- Stain-resistant. Red wine, BBQ grease, suncream, all wipes off.
- R11 slip rating on most outdoor ranges, safer than wet sandstone by a mile.
- 20mm thick so it sits flush with internal floors for indoor-outdoor flow.
The downsides
- Costs more upfront: £90 to £140 per m² supply, plus £75 to £110 per m² to lay.
- Cuts are slow, needs a wet diamond blade.
- Edges show if not chamfered properly.
Natural stone patios, the pros
- Cheaper material: Indian sandstone from £30 per m², premium limestone £55 to £75 per m².
- Warmer, more garden-y look. Every slab is unique.
- Easier to cut, saves a day on labour for fiddly shapes.
- Riven texture hides minor scuffs over time.
The downsides
- Needs sealing every 2 to 3 years (£150 to £300 per treatment).
- Algae and lichen in shaded north-facing gardens, annual jet-wash.
- Iron deposits in cheap sandstone leave orange stains.
- Not always frost-proof at the budget end.
What we recommend by garden type
| Garden type | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Modern extension, bi-folds | Porcelain (light grey or beige) | Flush threshold, contemporary feel |
| Cottage or period property | Sandstone (Raj green or mint) | Warm tones, traditional character |
| Shaded north-facing | Porcelain | Sandstone goes green fast in shade |
| Family with kids or dogs | Porcelain | Wipes clean, no sealing schedule |
| Tight budget under £3k | Indian sandstone | Best look-per-pound by far |
The bit no-one mentions: the sub-base
A patio is only as good as what is under it. We lay everything on:
- 150mm compacted MOT Type 1
- 40mm full mortar bed (not five dabs, that is a 5-year patio)
- Brushed-in jointing compound (Geo-Fix or Easy Joint)
If a quote talks about spot bedding or skips the mortar bed entirely, that patio will rock and crack within two winters.
